If you use to walk watching the ground, you should have notice the number of cigarette butts thrown on the ground instead of on the bin. If all cigarette butts smoked in a year, over 15 billons, were thrown on the ground, we would be walking on a tobacco carpet.

A 35 years old Swiss artist, Jinks Kunst, decided to use them to make Serge Gainsbourg portrait. To create it, he used 20.000 butts. Actually, it was the best homage someone could have paid to this polemical French singer, never-ending “Gitanes” smoker, for the 20^th anniversary of his death. Whereas other artists were exposing inedited photos, he wanted to make something really different.

The artist started to set aside is cigarette butts because of his ecological consciousness and, later, he thought about how to give them a use. He hadn’t misgiving so long: “Gainsbourg, of course!”. The work is one meter long by one meter high and represents three-quarter singer’s face in black and white. The artist needed two mouths to realize it.

“I needed 3 years to set aside all cigarette butts. I passed an advertisement on Facebook and I received butts from all over the world: Jakarta, Germany, United-States…”, tells with enthusiasm Jinks Kunst. His dream is to see the portrait definitively exposed in “rue de Verneuil” in Paris, residence of Serge Gainsbourg until his dead.

Si sueles andar mirando al suelo, te habrás fijado en la cantidad de colillas que hay. Si todas las colillas de los cigarrillos fumados al año, es decir 15 billones, se tirasen al suelo, andaríamos sobre una alfombra de tabaco.

En realidad, no se le podía rendir mejor homenaje a este polémico cantante francés, gran fumador de “Gitanes”, para el vigésimo cumpleaños de su muerte el año pasado. Mientras artistas exponían fotos inéditas del cantante, Kunst quiso hacer algo realmente especial para la ocasión.

El artista cuenta que empezó a apartar sus filtros por consciencia ecológica y que, posteriormente, se preguntó lo que podía hacer con ellos. No lo dudó mucho: “¡Gainsbourg, por supuesto!“. La obra mide un metro por uno y representa la cara del cantante en blanco y negro. El artista necesitó dos meses para realizarla.

“Necesité 3 años para recolectar todos los filtros. Pasé un anuncio en Facebook y me mandaron filtros desde el mundo entero: Yakarta, Alemania, Estados-Unidos…”, cuenta entusiasmado el artista. El sueño de Jinks Kunst es que el retrato llegue a ser expuesto de manera definitiva en la “rue de Verneuil” en Paris, residencia del cantante hasta su muerte.
