Vhils | Cities with faces | El rostro de las ciudades

Architecture is important to give personality to the cities. Unfortunately, most of the time buildings are made as quick and cheap as possible. Cities become greys and dulls. That’s when they get a playground for young street artists as Vhils, aka Alexandre Farto. He is a 24 years old Portuguese artist that uses walls to express his art: the “Scratching the Surface”. 

He gets his inspiration in his native city of Lisbon when the Portuguese capital was the place of a civil resistance to fight against a dictatorial regime: the 1974 Carnation Revolution. At that time, the walls turned into instruments of communication and hope for the inhabitants.

“Scratching the Surface” is a collection of giant portraits on unremarkable and decaying buildings, not painted on but actually scratched into the plaster. So, his works take rather depressing facades and try to re-contextualize them as canvases for art. You may ask yourself how does he realise it. The truth is he uses quite unusual techniques and materials as acid and bleach that eat into surfaces and expose the layers beneath. He also work on posters, metal, wood and paper. Vhils currently lives in London but you can see his work in Moscow, New York, Italian and Portuguese streets. This sort of street art is the example of how an act of destruction can become an act of creation.

La arquitectura es la esencia de la personalidad de una ciudad. Por desgracia, la mayoría de los edificios que se construyen hoy en día responden más a criterios económicos y temporales que estéticos. Todas las ciudades acaban pareciéndose: grises y sosas. Por eso se convierten en el terreno favorito de los artistas callejeros como Vhils, alias Alexandre Farto un Portugués de 24 años que utiliza las paredes para expresar su arte: el “Scratching the Surface” o “Rayar la Superficie”.

Su inspiración viene de su ciudad natal, Lisboa, cuando el pueblo Portugués se rebeló contra el gobierno dictatorial de la época: la Revolución Clavel de 1974. En ésta época, las paredes eran instrumentos de comunicación y de esperanza para los habitantes de las ciudades: es lo que quiere Vhils con sus obras.

“Scratching the surface” es una colección de retratos gigantes en paredes comunes, corrientes y sobre todo en descomposición, sin pintura y con yeso ya estropeado. Entonces, su trabajo consiste en eligir una superficie deprimente para transformarla en lienzo para su arte. Quizá te estés preguntando cómo realiza su obra. Utiliza técnicas y materiales poco comunes como el acido y la lejía que atacan la superficie de la pared y exponen la capa de debajo. También ha trabajado con pósters, metales, madera y papel. Vhils vive actualmente en Londres, sin embargo se puede observar su trabajo en las calles de Moscu, Nueva York, Portugal y Italia. Este tipo de arte es un ejemplo de cómo un acto de destrucción puede convertirse en un acto de creación.
