Deve Architects want to change the surroungings of the harbour, an industrial area once the main source of income of the town, into a cultural centre. The city center will change and become more modern. The castle will transform the harbour into a cultural space, and new technologies will be used to generate the energy needed.

Sailing is an important entertainment in this city, which is why the harbour had to change its purpose. Now the industrial edifications are not needed for the same as before, and the area had to be re-designed. By creating a modern castle, which can serve the region's cultural and technological needs, the harbour will become an interaction space again.

Mediante la creación de un castillo moderno, que puede servir a los intereses culturales de toda la zona, el puerto puede llegar a convertirse de nuevo en un espacio de interacción entre personas.

We all know that walking not only keeps us healthy but also generates energy. But, we never really thought of putting this energy into use.

Laurence Kemball-Cook actually thought about that, and he invented the rubber Pavegen stone, which will help producing power by simply steeping on it.

The Pavegen system is capable of powering up lights, computers, automatic doors, street lighting, light up shop façades, train and bus timetables and more. It can be inserted among regular sidewalk sections, to capture the kinetic energy people spend walking.

The Pavegen System consists of a rubber Pavegen stone, which whenever stepped on flexes 5mm, and the dynamo technology stores the kinetic energy produced. The top of the slab is made from recycled rubber car tyres, and the inner surface is made with recycled aluminium.

Every time that a person steps on it, the slab glows indicating that the power has been generated. If it is located in an area with high footfall each slab will generate 2.1 watts per hour.

It is available in a variety of colours including grey, red, blue and other mixes.

It can also be used as an advertisment, adding custom branding options, so you will promote your brands sustainability credentials. Logos can also be added to the central lamp as shown or etched onto glass.

Imagine how much energy could be stored from a single day if we install this in a central area.

Es de conocimiento público que caminar no solo nos ayuda a mantenernos sanos, sino que también genera energía. Pero, hasta ahora nadie puso esta idea en práctica, es decir, nadie hizo uso de esta energía.

La energía que produce éste sistema es capaz de encender luces, computadoras, puertas automáticas, alumbrado público, fachadas de tiendas, paneles de horarios de trenes y buses, entre otras cosas.

Cada bloque puede ser insertado en las aceras, para captar la energía cinética de la gente que va caminando. El sistema Pavegen consiste en una piedra de goma Pavegen, la cual, cada vez que es pisada se contrae 5mm, y es entonces cuando la tecnología dinamo almacena la energía cinética producida.

La parte superior de cada bloque está hecha de caucho de neumáticos de coches reciclado, y la superficie interior está hecha con aluminio reciclado.

Cada vez que una persona pisa el bloque, éste se ilumina indicando la cantidad de energía que se va generando. Si ésta se encuentra situada en un lugar con mucho tráfico de gente, cada losa generará 2,1 vatios por hora.

Imagine la cantidad de energía que podría ser almacenada en un solo día si lo instalamos en una zona céntrica.

A new type of fuel wants to be born.

Although not achievable any time soon, scientists are taking huge steps towards a much better type of fuel than oil or coal. This is great news, since that will help fight global warming.

A group of scientists in UCLA's School of engineering and applied science have discovered a way to convert Escherichia coli bacterium (by insertign two coded genes, one from cheese, and another from yeast) into a longer chain alcohol, which is what is needed to produce a greater amount of energy than other biofuels.

Previously, biofuels were created based on five carbon atoms the most, and nobody could find any longer, but this one, has eight, so the energy it produces is a lot more. This opens a door to future investigations.

This study is sure to help others come up with even better solutions for our dependency on coal and oil. Let´s hope they find it soon.

Aunque no se conseguirá a corto plazo, científicos en todo el mundo están avanzando hacia un nuevo tipo de combustible mejor que el petróleo o el carbón. Son muy buenas noticias, ya que esto nos ayudará a combatir el calentamiento global.

Un grupo de científicos de la Escuela de Ingeniería y ciencias aplicadas en UCLA han descubierto una manera de convertir la bacteria Escherichia coli (insertando dos genes, uno de queso y otro de levadura) en un alcohol de cadena larga que es lo que se necesita para producir mayor cantidad de energía que otros bio-carburantes.

Anteriormente, los biocarburantes eran creados a partir de cinco átomos de carbón como mucho, ya que no se encontraban sustancias con más, pero en este caso, tiene ocho, lo que permite una creación de energía mayor. Esto abre muchas puertas a futuras investigaciones.

Este estudio supone una ayuda importante a otros que seguro vendrán con mejores soluciones para remediar nuestra dependencia del carbón y el petróleo. Esperemos que la encuentran pronto.
