12000 miles in the Pacific Ocean, from San Francisco to Sydney. That is the distance that David de Rothschild and his crew will sail a boat made of plastic and recycled products. The team will be accompanied by four cientists, who will study different things concerning the seas.

The real eco-journey will start between Hawaii and California, at the Eastern Pacific garbage patch, a man-made waste island made of marine debris that float around the same area due to the currents that surround them. The boat is a catamaran, made of 20.000 PET plastic bottles, put together without any glue or resin into pontoons. The pontoons are attached to a plastic tube, all along the hull. It has solar panels along the cabin, a wind turbine and bikes, as the means to generate energy. And an hidroponic garden will prevent them from scurvy.

The best thing about it, is that when the trip ends, the whole boat can be recycled again. Sea trials are going well, let´s hope they can do it.

12000 millas en el Océano Pacífico, desde San Francisco hasta Sydney. Esta es la distancia que David de Rothschild y su equipo quieren navegar en un barco hecho de plástico y productos reciclados. El equipo estará acompañado por cuatro científicos, que estudiarán diferentes aspectos del océano durante el viaje.

El verdadero eco-viaje dará comienzo entre California y Hawaii, en la gran mancha de basura del Pacífico este, una acumulación de desechos marinos que flota alrededor del mismo área, debido a las corrientes que lo rodean. El barco en cuestión es un catamarán, hecho de 20.000 botellas de plástico PET, unidas sin ningún tipo de pegamento o resina, formando los pontones. Los pontones están unidos entre sí mediante un tubo de plástico que recorre todo el casco. El barco tiene paneles solares a lo largo de la cabina, así como una turbina y bicicletas, como medios para la generación de energía. Un jardín hidropónico les ayudará a prevenir el escorbuto.

Lo mejor de todo esto, es que cuando el viaje finalice, el barco en su totalidad podrá ser reciclado de nuevo. Los tests marítimos por ahora van bien, esperemos que lo logren.
